GREATNESS ON TOUR

Carlene Carter still sounded solid as she opened the show. She even went out to the merchandise table after her set for pics and autographs. She would return several times throughout the night. Emmylou Harris can still sing, though her voice isn't quite as strong as it once was. John put on a great performance, with a backing band that was phenomenal. Of particular note was the fiddle player and the bass player. The fiddler definitely kept the energy of the crowd up for the whole show. The bass player was amazing as he switched between his 4 string, 6 string, and upright bass. This was an amazing concert, I was 5 rows from the stage and enjoyed every minute of it.

MELLENCAMP IS FUNNY, CARING AND BRILLIANTLY TALENTED!

It was the perfect combo of humour, politics and music. He told us hilarious but very touching stories when playing his new songs... he let us sing along to his old stuff and corrected us when we forgot a verse and went right into the chorus... and had a running gag throughout the whole concert about how Canadians should build a wall to keep the Americans out (and that it'd only need to be a few feet tall to confuse the USA nowadays).

It was an awesome show (although I could have done without the 20 minute film before the actual show). Seen him twice before the first time being at Wings Stadium in 1986 and then DTE in Detroit like 20 years ago, The sound at Miller is audio perfect, great mix of new material, old tunes and some stories. He told this great story about his grandma that was funny, touching and I think the tune was named "Even the longest days are the shortest days" one of the best tunes he's ever done. Looking at some previous set lists think got a few more oldies than some other locations. For a guy that had 3 heart attacks in the past he's got an amazing amount of energy as does the band, If you get the chance see him it's well worth your time and money

I expected nothing but the best from JM. He delivered on all notes. I have seen him five times and all were great. Being a fellow Hoosier and the biggest fan west of the Mississippi, he just keeps getting better with age. Since his song Paper and Fire which I believe was a changing moment in his songs, he truly has expressed his deepest words in his songs instead of the pop stuff. The intro was a bit long(video) but I get it. Not everyone knows his true story. Love you John...keep rocking. your #1 fan.

I have been a fan of John Mellencamp since 1979 and have enjoyed his music for 40 years. I know some people thought the intro was a tad long but if you listen to the message I thought it was well worth watching. I thought he and his band were great! I would have loved to hear a few more old tunes but I get it that you won't hear everything. I liked the smaller venue as I have become less of a fan of large concert arenas. To hear a man who is a couple years shy of 70 still putting out the music like he does I thought it was a timeless performance.

Let’s commence the sound people on this concert because most concerts the sound is fair at best… The drums where super tight and sounded immense.. The guitars ripped with heavy crunch and the bass was tight and deep. Piano and violin 🎻 sounded smooth as butter.. lastly the vocals were smooth and up in front in the mix and not baried as usual at most concerts.. Johns voice sounded strong and the band was extremely tight… Finally I get to see a live performance that was done the way a live performance should be done… AAA+++

John Mellencamp put on a great show. We sang along and danced through most of the show. So fun! The crowd however was overall grumpy. They were angry about the movie and yelled through most of it. Friends, please, if you don't want to stand up, participate, and have fun....stay home, sit on your couch and watch it on your devices!!!!!

Great evening last night. A wonderful mixture of old and new music. Band was tight seemed to be having a great time too. Good stories and some reminders of the fact that there are issues that need to be dealt with in the USA! Loved John bringing up a fan on stage to dance with her. A truly happy moment. To the woman in front of me who took video footage of most of the songs and then spent time editing them during the next song, you missed a great night. Try going to a show and being present. I totally understand all the negative comments about john. He’s a bit gruff and even to the people that butter his bread. But in all honesty I have to just get past that. I have been attending his shows regularly since 1986. I have traveled to other states to see him. His music makes me move and his band is extremely tight. It’s rock and roll the way I love it. If you go to the show and listen to the music without screaming out unsolicited requests you, everyone around you and the band will enjoy the night! I travelled from New York to NOLA to see him and he DEFINITELY DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Looking forward to seeing him at The Beacon in New York in June, a local show.

HOUSTON SHOW WAS GREAT!!

Complaining about 30 min movie clips before the show? Really? John’s voice is rougher, but still strong. Crowd on their feet for a lot of the show even though an older crowd. Know who he is before attending. Complaining about his politics is ridiculous. He’s always been a fighter for the down trodden. Loved his non hits.

THANKS FOR A GREAT EVENING!

I’m glad I didn’t read any reviews before I went. I like to judge for myself. Yes the 25 minute pre performance black and white movie clips seemed odd. In the end, the clips seemed to point to serious monologues and social topics in the news today. I was impressed by the energy and choreography of the band. When the screen raised and the four musicians stepped in unison, for me it was like watching the 4 horsemen stepping forward to attack. Was there foul language? Yes, and I don’t care. We’re there touching stories? Yes, and I do care. And was the audience engaged? Yes! Very engaged and except for a scant few immature individuals, they were respectful; dancing, singing, laughing, and when called for, silent. Thanks for a great evening Mr M and friends.

He was great and personable but the audience not so much— rude, drunk and not really wanting to hear the show. He actually had to say something to people who were screaming and not letting him sing. Seriously Seattle audience was disgusting laughing at serious stuff, tell him to fast forward through a story and screaming stupid stuff as he told us about a song or life moment. I saw Mellencamp in Memphis in 1984 and enjoyed this show as much as that one. Played a lot of classics plus several songs off Strictly a One eyed Jack. John seemed to really enjoy himself and the crowd responded in kind. I didn't know what to expect from earlier reviews but i thought he and his voice and band were in fine form. No preaching just a lot of great music. Having Lisa Germano back adds that something special to the show. I thought the TCM show was too long but most of the crowd knew it was going to be there so no problem in Memphis. If I could I would go back for the second show!!

AWESOME PERFORMANCE

This was my first time seeing John perform. I was thrilled. I paid a lot for my ticket and I was not at all disappointed. He performed some classics and new songs. He's clearly not lost any of his talent. His band is exceptional. I found John to be smart, funny and quite captivating. He relates to his audience by including them as he's singing and makes eye contact constantly. He is humble and it's clear he appreciates his fans and shows his appreciation by the way he interacts to the extent he can. I would gladly pay the same amount to see him again! What a truly gifted, talented man. I continue to listen to his music daily and appreciate what a true storyteller he is. I'm sorry for those who didn't or weren't able to appreciate the talent he brought to the venue they visited. THANKS JM AND BAND!

OUTSTANDING AUTHENTIC PASSIONATE ARTIST

It was not a concert, it was a performance where we got to meet the man and see how creative, interesting, and authentic he can be. He is passionate about the causes in which he believes and that came through in his performance. Only a few Clevelanders were boorish and difficult but enough of them were loud enough that they almost derailed the show. THANK YOU JOHN, for toughing it out. It was one of the best shows I have seen! I remain a lifelong fan! It was an adults only show but not over the top, a couple of f-bombs and a discussion of love-making but nothing crazy! Absolutely solid! Rain on the Scarecrow is still one of my fav anthems; so great to see it live! Outstanding!

I had a fabulous time! John played 17 songs - just enough. The concert was neither too long nor too short. (Although, selfishly, I've always loved Deep Blue Heart and hope, one day, to hear it live.) John's voice was strong. The band was spot-on. And the crowd was into it. The perfect mix of song, dance, and storytelling! Thank you John for returning to Baltimore and making my night a memorable one.

I AM A TRUE FAN

I don't get the negative review.. I am a fan of the artist..so let him be what he needs to be. I think there was enough of everything to please everyone. i didn't mind the movie.. so he has a sponsor.. he wants to continue his art of music.. he didn't take any shit from the record companies that wasn't forced to and gave up movie roles even though he could have made a lot of money because he wanted to make records. He still sounds great for his age... i think he is so real and I love it.. I left wanting more.. but that is because i love his music.. The band was great and he did alot to showcase them. He did so much for regular people..( ie Farm Aide) I will end by saying , there are fans of his radio hits , and there are fans of HIS ,, that is what I am and i loved this PERFORMANCE, it was not a concert!

DEF NOT OVER THE HILL AND COMPLETELY NON-POILTICAL

We saw John at the Beacon last night and he crushed it. He connected well with the audience and 70%+ of the songs were "greatest hits". He sung one song about homelessness, but what struck me is that he didn't blame dems or repubs, progressives or conservs. Just that the system is failing these people. Probably the lease political show I've seen in quite some time. His voice is not what it used to be (he was smoking on stage), but the crowd was very enthusiastic and all in on singing his top hits. Band was tights and the electric violin player was fantastic. Beacon is always a great place to see a show. I read about the 30 min movie, so we showed up at 8:30, just as the show started.

THIS IS AN ART SHOW AND IT’S FANTASTIC!

Everyone complaining about the beginning of the concert when the clips from old TCM are relevant to his songs, for example play guitar, small town, etc are definitely inspired by these movies and if you just took a second to listen, it makes sense. Also, mellencamp voices over clips inbetween before showing the old movie clips to bring perspective (once again listening would clarify for a lot of people complaining). The stage was amazing the background of his set is from a streetcar named desire(it’s relevant!), the crowd was absolutely obnoxious and spoke over him a lot when he was telling stories. As for politics? He mentions how thoughts and prayers don’t do anything to help, sorry if that upsets you boomers. Also, yes he will chastise the crowd IF THEY GET THE SONG WRONG. (If you’re messing up jack and Diane you deserve to have the writer correct you) His band is just as talented as he is. It would be nice if others actually appreciated the work of art that this show is. I loved it

STILL ROCKING WITH MELLENCAMP

Wow! Stunning and brilliant performance. I saw him in 87 and 88, tied for first greatest concerts in history, mind-boggling energy. 35 years later the impossible energy is gone, but the performance was as good. I sat in the 7th row with my granddaughter and she was surprised she could sing along with 5 songs, and she was touched by many others! Brilliant lyricist, powerful storyteller, amazing evening, thank you John for rocking with me, a 78 year old man!

SOLID SURPRISING PERFORMANCE

Although the old movie introductions and dummies on stage raised question marks ( at least to me and my wife)-the performance did not-solid sharp upbeat a good two hours-never saw him live until now and it was well worth the wait. if you did not enjoy the performance just not a fan of good music. Or maybe you were the ones yelling political remarks in back of theatre that he asked to quiet down.

GETTING BETTER WITH AGE

loved the old movie clips (never had seen Fugitive Kind/ Charlie5) and the show was better than expected. Loved the story about his gramma who called him buddy. His backing band was superb and John knows how to run the show to perfection. The only oddity to me is why can't he add When Jesus Left Birmingham to the setlist at least once just for Birmingham? According to the setlist website, he's only played it 5 times ever- all in 1994, in PA(2) MA, IL and Quebec. Hopefully he will add that as a surprise next time.

GREAT SHOW BY A SOLID PERFORMER.

Great show by a solid performer. Rarely do the performers of the 70'2/80's generation enough energy from the audience to have people literally standing almost the whole show. Mellencamp seemed to enjoy the show - despite some gent (idiot as he called him) trying to get him to sign a book in the middle of the show. Mellencamp pointed this out to the person in between songs and shook the persons hand as they both apologized. A few songs later Mellencamp signed the book and joked to the audience about it. Anyway, back to the show. Solid performance from Mellencamp and all band members - most notably a great fiddle player who gave it her all.

Overall great show. A mixture of old and new. Only negative was no encore. Don’t bands do that anymore? PPAC is always awesome to see an event, there are no bad seats. I would definitely see Mellencamp again.

I have loved John Mellencamp since I was a teenager and still love his music. At 68 it’s impressive that he is still touring. With that being said, it will be the last time I spend mo eh to see him. Why? Let me put it this way....one week before seeing Mellencamp, I went to see Eric Church....there is a huge difference in the feeling I got between the two shows. Eric Church looks as if he is having fun performing and interacts with fans and is just down right enjoyable to watch. Mellencamp? Not so much. To me, it seems as if it’s a job, Yes I k ownit really is his job and that’s fine but I just didn’t like the feeling I got. We were in the 6th row somI was able to watch him closely. I’m glad he didn’t discuss politics as he and I are on different ends of the spectrum in that regard. I didnt appreciate that after his song about injustice, he kneeled. It’s his prerogative and I get it, Injust didn’t appreciate it. Do I love his music? Absolutely! Good show not a great show.

Great show! Crowd was annoying, glad he shut them up. We paid good money to hear him play, not the loud clapper (off beat) in front of us. Respect is elementary. Respect the artist & respect the fact everyone paid to see him perform. Leave your gas/ farting to the lobby/ restroom. He is 71 doing what most of you can’t at 50. Flew from MSP to PDX to see a living legend and we are grateful for the opp. he has a heart and cares about his talent & ppl. So nice to see from someone who makes so much $$$ Tickets were a gift to my Mom who also grew up in a small town♥️🙏🏾

DON'T EXPECT A HIT PARADE, BUT GOOD THOUGHTFUL SHOW

It's Mellencamp's show, and if you don't like it, you can leave. I (and most of the audience) could have done without the 30 minute video intro filled with black and white movie clips, but it does provide a setting of who Mellencamp wanted to be. Mellencamp arrives with a cigarette in his mouth and a raspy voice under a backdrop of a 20's speakeasy. He warns you that the show might get political, will not be a hit parade concert, and might have some slow songs. The band was (of course) top notch, esp the drummer. Mellencamp skipped the arena bombast sound of R.O.C.K. and "I need a lover". He had his trademark fiddle/accordion sound, churning slightly reworked versions of many of his hits designed for mid-sized venues. He delivered a few new songs with semi-rambling stories and irascible social commentary. Dancing? Well, he's like 73, so not much. His voice was relatively capable and in tune but a bit age-slurred. The high notes were ably covered by the band members.

CLEARLY, APPRECIATION FOR CREATIVITY IS DYING

I don’t know what show people here watched, but I thought it was a refreshing change. Lots of classics, some new stuff, a really interesting stage setup, and he started the show with older films which contributed to his song writing and concepts. It was really cool seeing where some of the lyrics of his songs come from. Mellencamp is more of an icon than I gave him credit for, and he is definitely not afraid to try something new. I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed the show. My only criticism is that sometimes the arrangements adjusted the song’s tempo a bit, and kind of changed the song. But honestly, that’s a minor quibble.

JOHN GAVE US WHAT WE CAME FOR

I agree the film intro was too long, even though the clips gave you insight into John's inspiration and were pretty cool on their own. However - Once he started playing we heard hit after hit after hit. Two of my favorites were Paper and Fire and Crumblin' Down. He did not disappoint. I was on my feet dancing for all but 3 of the slower tunes. So much fun to revisit so much music from my generation! Hearing Joann Woodward read one of his songs added another dimension to the show. I thought it was great. Thank you, John! (And the band was fantastic too.)

Honestly I think everyone could've done without the bits of movies that played on for 30 minutes at the beginning and I hated the people who were drunk by the time the band hit the stage. It was a little uncomfortable when John called them out and reminded everyone it was an intimate venue. Finally I was very impressed by the energy and presence of the band and I thought he sounded true to himself! Took me back in time and left me smiling.

INTERESTING UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

John Mellencamp rocked the Beacon Theater! Was strange to start with the B&W old movies but once i read that the tour was sponsored by TCM makes more sense! He definitely channels the James Dean vibe throughout the show and the fact that the last movie clip was Streetcar Named Desire - explains the whole New Orleans style backdrop too. I liked his stories and patter throughout and unlike other concerts of old rockers, he embraces his fans’ loving and singing his old classics. The crowd was up on their feet for all the oldies and it was a great show all around!

TRUE ROCK AND ROLL LEGEND

Surprised by all the 1-star reviews. Saw him in Providence and while there may have been some things about this show that missed the mark, overall it was a great celebration of true rock and roll and American life. JCM was one of the groundbreakers who brought us to the modern era of rock with these classics and his music embodies the best of life in the USA. Definitely could have done without the movie intro but if you're not into that, just plan to come at 8:30. It could have been much shorter but it was an interesting insight into the inspiration for some of his music. Maybe he read the reviews and toned it down but he didn't sound like an angry old man at this show - some of his stories were a little rambling, "let me tell you a story grandkids" kind of interludes but they were entertaining. With light-hearted references to his smoking and cussing (both of which he did plenty of onstage) he shared some of his life experience and didn't get too specific with any criticism of the state of the country altho his story about a homeless girl was a bit of a buzzkill. The cigarettes have taken a toll on his voice but he still sounds awesome and rocks hard. Not sure what's going on with the jumpsuit - I felt like I should ask him to check my brakes - he's in great shape for his age but should think about some jeans or something. But overall he's still a rock star and his music will always bring me back to good times and as he put it, this show created a music community, I was one of the youngest ones there (fortysomething) but you wouldn't know that we all were at different stages of our lives when we first fell in love with these songs. Really glad I got to see him. Great show.

NOT BAD FOR A OLD GUY.

John was better then I expected due to reviews from his previous concerts. We could have done without the opening movie scenes but no opening act so I guess it was a time filler. I thought his voice got better as the night went on and he played all the songs You would want to hear. John didn't talk very much. The only exception was a story about his grandmother and it was very entertaining. I went with my daughter and we both enjoyed the show.

OK PERFORMANCE

Having seen Mellancamp before, I knew what I was in for. The 20 Minute Into movie had Graffiti on the screen (Not sure if it was intentional or not, but it was distracting.) The band was solid, but John Mellancamp's vocal range has seen better days. Noticeably absent from the Setlist were ROCK in The USA, Hand To Hold On To and the classic Hurts so good. Most of the attendees were over 50 and it felt a bit like going to your high school reunion to play listen to some John Mellancamp's songs around a campfire. Mellancamp is entertaining but his acoustic Sing along of Jack and Diane was lame and his banter with the Ottawa audience was a bit weak. Light show was poor, but the Sound in the arena was acceptably good.

John sounded great! Too bad he didn't play more of his top hits that the crowd who paid would have loved to hear. His story telling of how he reached his potential and his song lyrics was not in line of his policical stance of today . BIG LET DOWN!

My wife and I saw John Cougar in Albuquerque on April 30th, 2019. We are both 57 and we enjoyed listening to his music during HS and college. Cougar and Segar were bucket lists for us as far as seeing old rockers. We saw Segar a few months ago and he was very good. (No political views, just songs) Cougar played at the Kiva Auditorium, which is inside the Convention Center. The concert was sold out, and it appeared that most people were our age or above 50 yoa for the most part. We felt that it was very hot inside the Kiva, therefore, we were a bit uncomfortable. The show started at 8:00pm. From 8:00 to 8:30pm, we all had to sit through an intro about his life. The audio was low and it was hard to hear over the late arrivals. Not my thing watching an intro for 30 minutes. I want to hear the songs. We came to rock and hear the hits. He did not start with any hits. The first 30 minutes was non energetic and in that 30 minutes he played only "Small Town" At some point, either at the beginning or between songs, Cougar talks about fans who can be drunk and loud and there is no place for it because he wants everyone to hear the music and not hear the loud drunk fan. I would agree with him on that but I questioned it because if you are playing your music instead of talking about Black Lives Matter and other views, you would not hear that loud drunk fan. He also went into a story telling mode. He talked about his dear friend who had been rocking with him for 45 years. He talked about his friend being arrested in ABQ in the 80's. Cougar said that his friend was beat up by two females who he shared a cell with. Not true! Males and females can not share a cell. Again, not enough music and too much talking. He did not play Hurts So Good, Rockin in the USA and I need a Lover. He could have played all these songs instead of telling stories and stating his political views. These songs are part of the reason he can still tour at the age of 67. Old rockers like us want to hear those songs, not story telling, 30 minute into's and political views. Overall, I will not go see him again. We were so looking forward to seeing his concert. Big fans of his back in the 70's and 80's. A big Let Down!

I'll never understand why older artists don't want to play the classics we are there to hear! I enjoy hearing new music, but John doesn't have any new music. He has weird little "story" songs, mostly political. And absolutely not what anyone wants to hear. Sadly too much of that - and not nearly enough classic Mellencamp.

SURPRISED

So, I bought these tickets for a friend & I months ago & paid over $200 each because I was afraid of missing the chance to see him in concert before he kicks the bucket. Had a whirlwind of a day & got to the theater in time to have one more drink before the show started & we were totally revved up for a great night when the lights went down & the concert started. At first, we loved the movie clips that showed the actors & movies that influenced his life & made him the rocker he is, but then they kept coming & after 30 minutes, my wine buzz was fading & I actually wished I had a blanket so I could take a nap! I appreciate that as an artist, he shares what is important to him, but there should be an obligation felt to make sure the fans have a great experience too… When he sang & danced, it was great & I wish we had seats on the dance floor (do not buy tickets in a booth at the Chicago theater if you like to stand & dance at a concert. I didn’t know what booth meant, but will never buy tickets like that again)! I don’t regret buying these tickets even though I paid way too much, but there has to be a better way for John to share about the movies & actors that influenced him because starting off the concert that way totally zapped the electric vibe that was in the theater when we thought the concert/music was actually starting. Aside from that, he still has great rhythm & energy & I love that he’s still a rebel & has no worries about saying what he thinks!

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED

Saw Mellencamp last night in Louisville. the whole concert seemed a trifile self indulgent. 30 minutes of black and white film clips,, then 5 songs I had never heard of. At one point he told the audience, not to yell out and if they wanted to then go outside!! Kind of bizarre. Told a story about a homeless person in Portland, again kind of bizarre. Said he was bored with doing concerts and wanted this to be a show. right before playing a tape of Joanne Woodward reciting one of his songs. The best part of the concert was the last 15 minutes when he actually sang, Pink Houses, Cherry Bomb and Hurts So Good. Not really what I was expecting. I came away saying to my husband, I am not sure if he is just a total dick. Upon googling that phrase I did indeed find out that he is in fact a total dick. Still like the old hits though.

Long time mellencamp fan I have seen him 21 times in 11 different states I remember when he would do two sets but this is a 67 year old man who has smoked and gotten older with us all over the years seen him the last time in Clearwater the old movie clip thing could had done with out the songs he choose though some great there is a ton of his catalog he dismissed. The music by Mellencamp and his band was great, but audio was not. At 8 pm, it was very odd to have to sit through 30 minutes of old movie clips from the 1940’s through the 1960’s for no apparent reason. (I didn’t pay $150 to see movie clips!) Also strange were a number of mannequins present on the stage throughout the show, for no clear reason. I found them VERY creepy and was eager to leave the venue as soon as he stopped playing. Female violinist was fabulous.

"Sponsored by TCM." Aside from the TCM contractual obligation, apparently John's ego saw this as an opportunity to inform us of all his 1950's inspirational movie heroes in a 30+ minute self absorbed docu-clunker. Cat calls grew with each new "who-cares" clip. Hopefully, this sort of brazen sponsorship affliction will not catch on. If you can get by the constant "F-bombs," spitting lung fish on the stage, aimless stories, tough guy persona and political preaching...you might just enjoy what is otherwise a good show.

WANTED TO LOVE IT

So disappointed in this performance at Sheas in Buffalo.. First off, it’s NOT a concert as he will tell you. The 30 minutes of mixed old black and white movies at the beginning was a complete buzz kill and I almost fell asleep. Had he started the show at 8:30 and just ran the movies while people were settling in, I think it would have been much better. Audience members were booing after 15-20 minutes of these movies as it made no sense and us old folks were falling asleep. It was agony to sit through especially since the lights were off and everyone was patiently waiting for the live music we paid for. Once he began performing, I did enjoy the concert but it took me a while to get back into concert mode. Jack and Diane was pretty much all sung by the audience and uneventful. He didn’t play many of his classics which made me sad. Overall, I left feeling confused on what I just experienced. The weird creepy mannequins on all 4 sides of the stage are still smiling at me! Strange and weird vibe for sure! On a positive note, I really loved the violin player!! I have been to Sheas many times and everything is always great but this show was just not for me. .

actually just saw him in Austin. I came away disapointed and much to my not suprised googled reviews and found this. Sounds like his banter and crowd admonishment is the same at every venue. The warmup act is old movies so wait about 40 minutes after his start time to miss that bullshit. could have started with i need a lover which is a great riff with electrifying guitar solo, btw he never played it, started with i have no friends, should change the words to i hate my fans. He missed a great opportunity to storytell go through the albums and years. He has a great catalog and i didnt need to hear all the hits but some familiar bside hits would have been cool. No encore. Im more mad at myself than him for overpaying for these tickets and concert. It hurt, but not so good.

DISAPPOINTED

As an '80s graduate from high school, I was so excited to revisit my youth with John Cougar Mellencamp songs. We had an amazing meal, and walked across the street to Keller Auditorium. The vibe was palpable. Then, it all went straight to shit. The whole movie opening thing got old real fast. The audience was actually booing by about the fourth one. I totally get where Mellencamp was going and that Brando and Newman were his idols etc etc. But it was boring and an absolute buzzkill. Finally, he came out and sang songs that I had no idea about. When he started admonishing the crowd for cheering loudly, it was so unnecessary. Then, he actually shit all over the town I live in, Portland, Oregon. God knows we have our issues, but I just felt ashamed to even be living here. It was sad, it was maddening, and I am just plain pissed. What a total waste of money. He had me, and lost me right at the very beginning for the rest of the show. I know I wasn't the only one. I'm sorry that I went.

After sitting through close to 40 minutes of Turner classic movies, he comes out and the mix was so bad you could not understand a single word that he sang. The most entertaining was when he yelled at people in the crowd for yelling. We left early after Jack and Diane and even that was pretty boring. We were looking forward to this show for months. A surprise show for my BF who loves Mellencamp. It was such a let down. Hung on for the hits, then Jack and Diane was a joke. What was with the movie classics and dummys on stage??? Then the homeless woman blow job story? Did you have to go into detail like that? Then in true douchebag fashion, JCM insulted his fans by saying, "if you're one of the people who screams when it's quite, go outside and yell". My BF had just yelled, I love you John! Thanks for making him feel bad. WE bought tickets to your show Cougar. Let us experience it the way we want to. Its all because his EGO needs him to be heard. It's unfortunate really. Now when I hear his songs on the radio, they'll be tainted by that shithole show. Never again. I only gave 1 star for the last song, Hurt So Good was good but we were already so bummed. So that was kudos to ME for making the best of it.

Disappointing show. Saw john in carbondale in 1986 and was excited for saturday night. I had a heads-up on the 30 minutes if old movie clips prior to the show starting. His opening songs were either newer or super obscure and had the audience puzzled. Once he was rocking for 2 or 3 songs, he would bring the show to a crashing hault with a story or belief. I was hoping for stories about "how he and Willie Nelson were organizing Farm Aid and stoned off their asses." Or something of the iike from his almost 50 years in the industry. Definitely could have done without the "performance art" for the Joanne Woodward poetry corner. It was awful and not what the audience came for. The 25ish minutes of blabbing could have been replaced by more of his catalog. Good but could have been great!

AWFUL START

Mellencamp did not need to torture the crowd with 30 minutes of old movie clips of his favorite characters or actors. That was a complete waste of time and the New York audience was "done with it" after just the first movie clip. Audience members were actually groaning every time another movie clip began. Most fans wanted an old-fashioned rock and roll show with Mellencamp's greatest hits from the 80's and 90's. That didn't happen until the last half hour of the show when John decided to be John. Overall, I'd say the audio at the Beacon Theater was horrible, and oftentimes Mellencamp's voice was completely overshadowed by drums, bass, and intstumentation. With his big hits, Mellencamp didn't even sing half of them. He let a very excited audience do most of the heavy lifting and singing. He did a lot of "mike holding" when the audience took over Jack and Diane and Pink Houses. I grew up in the 80's loving Mellencamp, Springsteen, and Bryan Adams, but this is the last time for JCM!

2 stars because the band was simply rock solid, & they put up with a LOT. Voice was as expected for a man in his 70's who's smoked the majority of his life. Not bad, just not what it used to be. The show started with 25 minutes of various b&w movie clips from the 40's-60's, which made people impatient - there were hecklers. Then the real show started. It was ok. He reached the acoustic portion of the set & was telling stories. Heckling grew worse; John lost his patience, storming off the stage, declaring the show to be over. Security finally got rid of the hecklers & the show went on, but you could tell he was just ANGRY for the rest of the show. He also cut 2 songs out of the performance, including Jack & Diane. After years in the biz, he needs thicker skin. If he's that sensitive, don't schedule a show for St. Patrick's Day (or any drinking holiday). It doesn't bring out the best in anyone. A lot of disappointed people last night. He allowed a few to ruin it for the many.

The venue was great as for John s show he was horrible. First we had to watch a intro for 25 min which was a waste of time. EMOTIONAL ABUSE TOUR

Mellencamp's show started out OK, but then after his fourth song he lectured the audience to stop screaming so loudly, "You're not at a bar, " he said. You could feel the excitement leave the venue. His storytelling left a lot to be desired and he came across as a sanctimonious d**k. Sure, he sang his big hits, but he's lucky his band carried him, otherwise they'd have been a bust. If you do go, and need to get a drink, do it right before "Eyes of Portland", unless you like hearing disturbingly judgmental (and likely made up) stories about the homeless and mentally ill. If you need another, do it during his acoustic "Jack & Diane" and listen to the much better radio version on the way home. That way you'll also miss the other lecture about the audience not knowing about verse and chorus. Lastly, I'm willing to chalk up his forgetting his own lyrics several times to his age, but I also can't rule out his being liquored up as a contributing factor. Oh, the acoustics also sucked.

ONE OF THE WORST I’VE SEEN

The Mellencamp show had to rank in the bottom 3 of all concerts I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot)! He talked more than he sang, told (bad) stories more than played music, and when he did play, he did mostly obscure songs and only a few of his hits. Worst than all he was rude to the crowd. Told the audience if we didn’t like it to “leave and get your money back.” Which would’ve been fine if he had the power to reimburse money, but he doesn’t. One women yelled, “Play something we know,” and he told her to “get the eff out!” He was condescending and self-righteous. Maybe someone should remind him that it was those hit songs and his fans that made him. Not his political views and boring tales.

I agree with the previous reviews. The movie at the beginning was terrible. The crowd was wanting him to play his hits. In the first seven songs he only played two hits. After the crowd was standing after small town, he proceeded to play three songs that no one knew. The crowd was enthusiastic and standing for each one of his major hits buddy only played like five or six. He has a lot of great songs, and this could have been a great concert, but it was one of the worst I’ve ever seen. His voice really sounded terrible. It was one of the worst concerts from age hardest I’ve ever seen.

Everything you read above my review is true! Expensive tix to see a grumpy old man tell you his political views after you suffer through 30 minutes of TCM Old Movies…. I was yawning at that point! I was so excited, but quickly realized seeing this concert was a big waste of time & money. He yells at the crowd, telling someone to go get their money back among other things. He smokes on stage, which doesn’t help the fact he can’t breathe to sing! He needs to stay home & paint. The paintings I actually liked!

I was really looking forward to this show. The movies to start the show, while neat in their own right at a different time and place, went on way too long and sucked everyone's excitement away before the show even started. Then once he finally got on stage he literally hawked a loogie, sang absolutely terribly, could hardly move around the stage, was singing the weirdest and most awful songs I've probably ever heard, and was politically polarizing. You could tell at the beginning that people were really WANTING to enjoy themselves, but after awhile it just couldn't happen. We left early. I'm still glad I went because I would have wondered if I'd have missed something if I didn't, but if you don't need to see it for yourself BELIEVE ME...skip this one. ANYTHING would be a better night out than this.

We were so excited about seeing Mellencamp. It was interesting to see the set and movies clips- love old black and white films! Then we sat there for over 30minutes watching movies I could see at home. He finally came out and it was almost comical. Strumming the guitar and then posing during songs. WORST CONCERT EVER

I went with the wife last night in Detroit and what an awful experience. I could not believe how bad it really was so I Googled Mellencamp reviews and stumbled across this thread. The 30 minute opener was a total snooze fest and it took another 20 minutes to finally play a hit (Check it Out). Next was some weird crazy rambling by a bitter old man followed by the worst version of Jack and Diane I have heard in my life. He played a bunch of other snoozers and that was enough for me to leave early. I looked at the set list and did not even care I missed Hurts So Good, Cherry Bomb and Pink Houses. WHAT A BUST!

I was given tickets to the John Cougar Mellencamp concert for Christmas. It was the worst concert I have been to. He seemed bent on his own boring agenda. Let me give you an example. The concert began with a 35 minute reel of old movie clips. The crowd wasn't checked in, and starting calling "We want music". The concert, which he said was not a concert, but a performance was lacklustre at best. He told stories that fell flat, and too many songs that his audience didn't know. A big waste of money. Venue (Massey Hall) was great as always.

You would have thought he would have come out and explained why we had to sit through that. About a 3rd of the way through the set, someone yelled out from the audience for him to qiut story telling an play music. He got very vulger with is language and walked off the stage saying concert was over. He then came back out about 5 minutes later, sang about 4 songs and walked off. Never appoligized for anything or made any comments or even thanked us for coming. He voice was very rough and his back up singers did a lot of the singing. Shouldn't have waisted my money.

REEKS OF ETHEREAL DESPAIR

I used to enjoy JCM. I would be kinder to recognize all pressures of being older, on the road, etc - but JCM didn't give us that break in ticket pricing-did he? I really bought the ticket for the backup performer that was SUPPOSED to be playing w/him. I feel snookered - obviously did not play. Instead we endured 25 MIN of old movie clips. YIKES-- the theme, as I surmised -- see above title. It did set the correct tone for the performance. JCM giving stage performance instructions to the bass player in 2 or 3rd song - really? Tragic. Voice shot. We left after the film & 4 songs and I was suicidal then - glad I missed all the antics others note. Sad and depressing. If you "Got No Friends" and you dislike doing what you do as much as he obviously does- which emanates from every pore- know when to hang it up.
